pressIn May of 2006, lured by film’s potential to reach larger audiences, the successful Canadian theatre company, Raven Productions, became Lucid Productions. Lucid is now spreading its wings within the realm of motion pictures and is currently marketing two of its scripts for feature film production (The Blade & The Butterfly, and Salvia Divinorum). The company’s ownership over the full-length stage play Anime and the shorter Rising Sun Sonata also show that the company has not forgotten its roots in theatre; reasserting its belief in the power of “story”, and its varied forms, to communicate ideas that may bring about change.
Of the numerous articles and rave reviews that have been written about the former Raven Productions play, Ecstasy - regarding its excellent production, and its phenomenal audience appeal – the following review marked the company’s height of theatrical achievement that eventually spurred its decision to move into film.
“I loved it.” British author, Irvine Welsh, on the former Raven Productions’stage adaptation of his best-selling novel, Ecstasy.
“I feel that Ecstasy, by Raven Productions, has been the best theatrical adaptation of my work to date… and I’ve seen different productions all over the world. I feel that it has fully realized the potential of the story ‘The Undefeated’, giving the text a power which I felt it lacked on the page. It fully captures the spirit I intended, and in its control of pace and use of environment, it creates a unique theatrical experience. It made writing the thing worthwhile… artistically, the play delivered the book for me.
I was surprised just how excellent this production was, and I could not believe the empathy and skill with which Keith Wyatt handled the dramatization of this piece.” - From the introduction to 4 Play, a published collection of stage adaptations of Irvine Welsh novels from Vintage, Random House.
